Desaru - 16 Sep 2013

This time we went to Desaru, Johor. This was during the Malaysia Day Holiday.  The week before we still didn't have any idea what to do during the holiday and Papa came up with this just a few days before. Awesome!

We started the journey very early - right after the Subuh Prayer.  We stopped at McDonald's in Pekan for breakfast around 6.30am.  We should have opted for the stalls because the food there wasn't much.  Nasi Lemak would've done the deal better.

The journey along the Kuala Rompin stretch towards Desaru was a beautiful one but I didn't have the chance to snap any pictures - Papa drove too fast.  Since Papa used to study in Johor, he suggested a few places to visit in the vicinity. We did venture out of the normal route but nothing interesting there.

While looking at the map to get back to the normal route to Desaru we found a signpost showing the Tanjung Balau Fishermen Museum.  It was still early - around 11.00am - so we decided to stop there.  It was the best decision!

There was an exposition going on. So, we scrounged the expo and found lots of interesting food to eat.  We stopped at a stall and ordered Bee Hoon Soup - not very tasty, but we ate it anyway.  We also bought some Otak-Otak and the taste was okay -  not out of this world. Biasa-biasa ja. It was almost noon, the sun was heating up and the music from the expo was blaring.   Both too much for the eyes and ears to bear. It's time to find somewhere cool.

The museum's entrance fee was super cheap - RM2 each. The exhibits were very interesting with loads of information about fishing, fishermen, fishing village and their history.  Since sea buffalos are still in abundance in the area, they have a special gallery for it.  The lives of fishermen in the olden days were shrouded with mystery and myths. They had all kinds of matras for all kinds of activities.

They also had exhibits on traditional games - I used to play most of those games when I was small and I bet the same goes to Papa.  There was also a replica of an old kampung house.

After the main gallery, we ventured out to look at the many kinds of intricately designed and decorated old sampans used by fishermen.  I'm not sure whether they used the sampans for fishing in the olden days because they were so beautiful.

Out in the back of the museum there's another gallery - in another building.  They showed many different stone and rock formations over the centuries showing different eras.

Since the main gallery was built on stilts, they also had an exhibition area under the building for old sampans.

Many old sampans were exhibited under the main building.

There's also an exhibition hall for sunken ships from centuries ago.  There was detailed information on ship wrecks found in the surrounding area.

A replica of a light house inside the exhibition hall.

There was also a corner for modern nautical stuff.

 Replicas of world famous ships.

These are some of the artifacts from the sunken ships

Certificate of authenticity for each artifact.

Some china

Looking interested.

More certificates.

After the tour. Time for a little fun outside.

This cape was secluded and not really promoted as a tourist destination.  Maybe it's famous among Johoreans but we haven't heard of this place before.  And so the detour was actually worth it after all.

After that we drove to Desaru (about 3km away) and were given the only room available at the resort (forgot the name).  It's crowded and full house because of the national holiday.  So the urban legend was true after all - don't agree to take the only room available at any hotel.

In our case, the water flushed itself every few minutes but we slept throughout the night without any other 'interruption' - thanks to tiredness.  Luckily the water didn't flush while we're using the water closet!  I hated the bathroom. Period!

That's the only attraction there other than the sea and the beach.  The nearest town was Bandar Penawar - a new township without much attraction but given time, may flourish together with Desaru.

Zoo Negara

We went to The National Zoo because we always passed it on our way to Pak Chaq's house since 1998!
I don't know where I put all the other pictures.  Too many in the PC, laptop, pendrives, CDs, facebook, google+! Blegghhh! Am sooo not in the mood to look for them.  Just have to make do with these

We arrived quite late - around 2.00pm.  But we decided to enter still.  So we paid RM25 each and a little less for Zoey.  A picture in front of the zoo is a must as testament of our arrival. Heeheehee...

Can you spot the giant turtle? Or was is a giant tortoise?

Her first encounter with flamingos.  Zoey's very excited.  I wonder why they didn't fly away?  It's not covered - a very large open space.  Maybe their wings were clipped?

Thank you Tareeq for being a helpful brother.  There were lots of people but not at this spot.  I'm not sure the size of the zoo but it was tiring having to walk around. But alas! The animals made it worthwhile though.

Then we entered the walk-in bird cage. Zoey was chasing the birds.  I found a park bench and decided to rest a while.  Papa joined me. Look at Zoey!  All sweaty and could still be notty!

This was what we're really waiting for.  Now, that caught her attention!

So much so that she couldn't sit down throughout the show.

Bravo! Bravo! Hahaha...

She's able to relax during the second show.  The person handling the show was also good.  It was smooth.  Little children enjoyed themselves.  He got many people from the audience to be involved and participated in the show.  He also did a show involving eagles.

Then we moved on to the aquarium.  It's air-conditioned here.  Cool! Lega Mama.

Tareeq was still doing a great job entertaining Zoey.

She was running here and there and making so much noise on the wooden plank.  There were so many interesting water creatures and she just couldn't keep her excitement intact.  She wanted to be everywhere and near every tank!  Just when she's about to be mesmerized by one aquatic life, another caught her attention.  Letih oooo dok ligan dia merata.  Tiring! Very tiring! Especially being a mother who's constantly on paediophile alert too!

Luckily it was over! (After quite a while)

Ya! I was too tired to smile at the camera now.  Just happy watching your antics.

I'm just so glad we're together.  I'm also glad to see you guys happy and enjoyed every minute of it.  Luckily we're able to head to Pak Chaq's house a few minutes away and rest because I was really very tired.  My feet were killing me.

Indigenous Crafts - Malaysia vs Canada

When we visited the Art Museum, this special exhibition was on.  I think the differences between the two cultures were within thin lines.  Both have very similar kinds of crafts albeit different materials used.

Baskets
Top: Canada
Bottom: Malaysia

Food covers
Top: Canada
Bottom: Malaysia

Beads
Top: Canada
Bottom: Malaysia

Scarves
Top: Canada
Bottom: Malaysia

Small baskets
Top: Canada
Bottom: I'm not sure whether these are from Canada or Malaysia

Arts on wood
Top: Canada - these were quite small in size. They looked like the envelope openers
Bottom: Malaysia- this was actually a hand shield used by warriors and the size was quite big.

Aren't they interesting? Two different indigenous groups from two different continents (and quite far away from each other actually) have very similar culture. Now I'm not going to say a lot about this because I'm no expert but let the pictures speak for themselves.

I only have one thing to say - Amazing!

Uncle Pak Jan on 1 February 2014

We were the last people to visit uncle pak jan on 1 feb from 10.00-10.30pm. He passed away at 5.00am the next morning, about 7 hours later. He was papa's best friend. Truly a friend in need and both of us cherish his friendship. Alfatihah to him and may Allah put him among the believers in jannah.

We arrived at his house around 10pm that night, after we attended a Chinese New Year feast at our old neighbour's house.  The main reason we went to his house was because in December he told Papa to bring you guys to his house since it's been a loooong time since he last saw you.

He was already resting in his room.  So we had to wait while Aunty Min prepped him up on his wheel chair.  He broke both his legs after falling down in the toilet in July 2013 and after a few months recuperating in the hospital with a few surgeries in between was wheelchair-bound ever since.

We watched the TV and Zoey was with her usual antics.

It turned out that he was just back from Sungai Petani.  So we didn't want to stay long because he needed his rest before his dialysis the next morning.  We decided to take some pictures because we didn't know when we'll meet him again.  It was a fun night and everybody was enjoying the session.

We left around 10.30pm and headed to Pak Chaq's house.  Then we went back to Mak Tok's to rest for the night - we had a long day ahead the next day as we're going back to Kuantan.  Papa wanted to try the Jeli-Maran stretch this time and we needed to start early.  Papa decided to turn off his phone to save the battery life.

The next morning around 8.00am Papa had a call from Uncle Rizal informing that Uncle Pak Jan passed away that morning around 5.00am.  We hurried with breakfast and went to his house.  It turned out that Aunty Min tried to call Papa at 5.00am but couldn't get through (no doubt!).  We stayed a while there before leaving at 11.30am.

Papa was very sad because he lost his best friend.  We were sad too because both he and Aunty Min were really good friends and also our former neighbours who we could truly trust to put you guys up at their house whenever something came up - their house was in front of our old house (that's how close Papa and Uncle Pak Jan were - being friends since primary school). And we became neighbours from 2005-2009.

He was 46 years old.  We will miss you dear friend! And hope that Aunty Min will be strong.
